If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS A SCAM.
While watching the 4th Starship launch today on YouTube, I was surprised when Elon Musk seemingly interrupted the launch to announce an opportunity to double any cryptocurrency sent to a specific address. This was a deepfake — a sophisticated AI-generated video designed to steal money from unsuspecting viewers.
What happened
The scammers created a convincing deepfake video of Elon Musk during a high-profile live event. The fake video promised to double any cryptocurrency sent to a wallet address, a classic "send me crypto and I'll send back double" scam.
How to protect yourself
- Verify before you act. Any unsolicited financial opportunity is a scam.
- Deepfakes are increasingly convincing. Video alone is no longer proof.
- Never send cryptocurrency based on a video announcement, regardless of who appears to be speaking.
